Cooking with Oranges

Leave Vamos and go to an Orange Grove, located in a beautiful spot int the Stylos area. Here you will gather oranges to use in your cookery lesson. After a short stop for a drink and a light snack, you will head back to Vamos for a cooking lesson with Mrs Koola.

Menu: Pork with plums and oranges, browned "horta" (greens), "dolmadakia (vine leaes, stuffed with rice), orange cake. This will be followed by  meal, enjoying the dishes that you have just created (with a glass of wine or two!).

Duration: Approx 6 hours

Wine & Olives

You begin the day with a trip to an Olive Oil pressing factory where you will be given a demonstration of the olive oil producing process followed by an opportunityto taste the wonderful Cretan olive oil.
We then leave the factory and continue on to a winery where you will be given a tour followed by a wine tasting, sampling quality Cretan wines (served with some traditional Mezes). Trained advisors will be on hand to answer your questions.
Duration: Approx 4 hours

Bread & Cheese

Meet in the parking area opposite the church on the main road in Vamos You will be taken to a cheese dairy to see the processes involved in making Cretan cheese. The factory also produces yoghurt and you will be able to sample the local specialty of yoghurt and honey as well as the cheeses.
Afterwards we will go to one of the areas most traditional tavernas, set in the mountains, where you will be given a bread making presentation followed by a full meal.
Set in a beautiful landscape, the taverna is very popular with local families and visitors alike. The owner grows his own produce (organically) and keeps sheep and goats that provide the milk he needs to make cheeses etc.

Country Picnic

Your extremely knowledgeable guide, Yiorgos, will take you on a guided country walk around the hill of "Koules" in Vamos. You will be walking through 3 Metochia (country estates) identifying wild flowers, herbs and local flora (including Daphne (Basil), Olive, Fig & Carob trees. During the walk you will find a nice spot, shaded by a large oak tree, to eat a picnic whilst admiring the beautiful countryside. You will be given printed information on the wild flowers and herbs etc that you have identified during your walk.

Duration: Approx 4 hours

Fish Market Visit

Travel to a Fish Market in Chania, where you will be shown how to identify the different types of fish caught off of these shores and given guidance on the best way to cook them. You will also be given an insight into how a fish market operated. When we leave the Fish Market we will return to Vamos and take a short walk to the old 'fabrica' (an olive press dated 1846), where you will take part in a traditional Cretan cookery class, with Mrs Koula, using the fish that we have brought back from the market. When all the cooking is done, it is time to enjoy the meal you have prepared together, with some local wine of course! You will be given copies of the recipes you have used to take away with you.
